Fiji Humanitarian Mission

Dr. Mark WarnerBefore starting Surf Smiles Dentistry, I practiced dentistry in the Navy for five years. This five-year tour was filled with many great clinical and life experiences. During the summer of 2017, I served as the Navy Dental representative for the Pacific Angel Humanitarian Mission. I collaborated with Fijian and Australian dentists while leading a team in treating and educating patients from underserved communities.

After a week of traveling and preparation, we finally arrived at our accommodations in the city of Lautoka, Fiji. The Fijian people set up a cultural welcome event with Authentic Fijian food and dancing. It was amazing to see how much pride they took in their culture. The next morning we left bright and early for the village of Tavua. During the one-hour van ride along the coast to the village of Tavua I observed sprawling fields of sugar cane and scenic ocean views. The natural beauty was amazing!

In Tavua my comrades and I treated hundreds of patients throughout our week. Along with dental treatment, we had the opportunity to teach children about cavities and gum disease. This mission was extremely rewarding because of the fact that we had the opportunity to help so many people that normally wouldn’t have access to care.
